Through The Mask takes a closer look at “the mask” as an emblematic object represented in many different cultural contexts. Curated by Martin Guinard, the exhibition brings together contemporary artists from different countries across Africa and Europe such as Gonçalo Mabunda, William Cobbing, Alice Anderson, Mathieu Briand and Ophelia Finke. Given the broad spectrum of the purpose and function of a mask in the different cultural traditions there can’t be a « universal » category of the object. Nonetheless, a mask carries a strong fascination, whether they conceal, hide or evoke identity. Each artist in this exhibition plays and manipulates these sets of conventions.
