SHINJI TOYA

Born in: Japan

Born in Japan 1984, Shinji Toya moved to London U.K when he was 21. He studied fine art for the BA and MA at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. When he was finishing the master in 2013, Toya received the Contagious Nova Award of Lowe and Partners.

For years he has been working as an artist based in London who primarily works on digitally processed artworks. His practice explores the ideas of the ephemerality and transiency that are informed by the cultures and aesthetics of both the East and West. The approaches of the work include multimedia poetry, multimedia collage, and speculative design of algorithmic systems.

Since 2015 Toya has been working in association with the Arebyte gallery (London) for commissions of online-based art projects that critically approach the digital memory of the post-millennium age.

Toya presented his projects at Internet Yami-Ichi at Tate Modern Turbine Hall, Interfaces Monthly in association with Barbican, Royal Academy of Arts (U.K), the Yinka Shonibare’s Guest Projects, Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts (U.K), Art Licks Weekend, and Beijing New Media Arts Triennial.
