This work is part of Acosta’s “Stolen Paintings” series, which he began in 2008. For this series, Acosta is inspired by the ways in which some Cubans make a living, such as the black market economy of stealing from the government. With little access to resources, Acosta began stealing paint chips from buildings and objects in his native Havana, using them as his art materials. The hammerhead sharks featured in this work is a subject that has long interested the artist, as he sees them as metaphorical “threats” to contemporary Cuban society.
