They say that Alexander Povzner is a non-partisan artist who manages not to get stuck in the institutional deals, some kind of a dropout or a hermit. Povzner is a truly underground, undercover artist, in the sense that he appears everywhere, takes part in many shows, but still seems somehow absent. In many respects, this image has been created by his ability to keep silent, sitting or walking around with a solemn or grim air, and to dodge the questions from the journalists and critics. Povzner is sparing with words: he is completely occupied with objects. And if things are his words, then he is very talkative; one could even say that he barely stops talking—he goes on and on, and where, how, and when he is doing it is a secondary matter.
Povzner’s works, as well as the artist himself, became an integral part of today’s art process in Russia long ago. His works could be easily attributed not to one, but to several authors. He is equally successful everywhere, be it in the belly of a huge art center or in a tiny gallery off the trodden tracks. Various venues, not connected in any way, totally incomparable with each other, having absolutely different functional purpose and symbolic weight, incorporate the same artist, and he manages not to adjust to either of them. It is just that his activities are diverse and universal at the same time.
