HARALD STOFFERS

Born in: Europe

Harald Stoffers (Hamburg, 1961) takes on a wholly unique approach when producing his work. The artist is known for his letters, which combine written language, pictorial composition, and musical score. He began this practice after he joined a psychiatric institution at the age of 22, first writing single words (such as "bell") on small paper pieces which he distributed to other residents. These messages quickly evolved into Stoffers' current style: full letters written on intricately illustrated lines that resemble musical staves. The presentation of Stoffers' words imbue them with a rare intensity, making them tangibly rhythmic and musical. Stoffers' art was the focus of a documentary by Youssef Tabti, shown at La Force de l'art 02, Grand Palais, Paris (2009).
