ADOLF WÖLFLI

Adolf Wölfli (Canton Berne, Switzerland, 1864 -1930) became known late in his life as the quintessential outsider artist. Plagued by schizophrenia, parts of Wölfli's life were spent in a Swiss mental institution, others in penitentiaries. His manic drawings are the expression of his madness; intense, dynamic outbursts crowded into the picture plane. Classed among the artists who defined the Art Brut movement, Wölfli's works have been featured in numerous international galleries, auctions, and museums.
