The one-off monoprints of body parts and gestural smudges caught in deep blue ink and drawn or stitched together capture the plastic nature of the nervous system and our potential to develop new pathways in the brain. Emson attempts to bridge art and science by making a creative play of rewiring the nervous system.

Camilla Emson is a London based multi-disciplinary artist. Her appropriation of unfamiliar tools calls forward the body as an intuitive storyteller. Soon after receiving her Masters in Fine Art in 2011, Emson pursued more fully her quest to understand the body by formally training as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and Dance Movement Psychotherapist. For Stretching The Imagination she has sourced brain scans from trauma patients, which illustrate the healing transformative potential of experiential therapies. These monoprints visually echo the biomorphic bleach stains and knotted entanglements of loose thread in Emson’s large sewn canvases Fibrosis (2012-13) and Colour Maps (2014-15). Emson's work has been described as kind of 'psychic surgery.’
