In the mid-1980's, Mendes co-found Grupo Puzzle, a platform for young Portuguese artists to exhibit their work. An infatuation with Portuguese popular culture runs through his paintings, seen in his self-portraits, erotic depictions, and his portraits of flowers, landscapes, and wandering groups of nuns. His work has been shown in museums and galleries internationally, with select solo exhibitions including: Galeria Graça Brandão Lisboa, Portugal (2013); Igreja de Santo António dos Portugueses Roma, Italy (2010); Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves, Porto, Portugal (2001).
