Malick Sidibé (Soloba, Mali, 1936 - 2016) was known as Mali's most famous photographer, earning international recognition in the 1960s for his black-and-white studies of life in Bamako. He got his start in photography in 1956, opening his "Studio Malick" two years later. Caught in the wave of 1950's photographers documenting the coming of Independence, Sidibé quickly earned widespread recognition among Mali's youth. His work has been shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2016, 2015); Trinta Arte Contemporánea, Santiago de Compostela, Spain (2012); Istanbul Modern, Istanbul, Turkey (2012).
